Article: House passes historic higher education act
From Article:
The Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act, if passed by the Senate, will produce almost $90 billion in savings over the next 10 years, according to a press release from the office of Congressman George Miller, chairman of the House of Education and Labor Committee and author of the bill.
From Different Article: Ruth Marcus: Obama oversees quiet upheaval in education
The Savings is Expected to Come from the change in the way Student Loans are Handled.
Cutting out this "unwarranted subsidy," as Obama put it in a speech Monday, would free up almost $90 billion over 10 years. The House would use the largest chunk of that money to raise Pell Grant amounts for low-income college students; the grant amounts have lagged far behind the increase in tuition costs.
Colleges would get $2.5 billion to figure out how to keep track of how many students actually manage to graduate, as opposed to piling up debt and then dropping out.
Another $8 billion would go to early-childhood-education programs, with the goal of establishing some standards and accountability in the widely varying quality of preschool programs.

A large part of the money would go toward the bureaucratic maze, actually inflating cost, and the degree children's lives in the education system will be helped or hurt remains an open question. In the total picture, is what they are doing good or bad? I don't know. I tend to believe in a permissive education system that is guided not so much by goals and agendas as just giving the kids the resources to learn and encouraged to enjoy learning. Education should be about what the people want and not what the giant multi-national corporations want; and that is having rewarding employment without becoming a slave to that employment. I don't really understand why everything has to be made into such a costly maze of confusion and a headache. That said, let me make clear, I didn't approve of the Bush agenda on education either.
Is the current system of education about helping children or conditioning children to be slaves to big government and big business???
