Benet was born Brenda Ann Nelson in Hollywood, Los Angeles, California. She attended UCLA for a time. Her first acting roles were in 1964, with appearances on Shindig! and The Young Marrieds. She eventually became an actress very much in demand for roles in episodic prime time television in the 1960s and 1970s, including I Dream of Jeannie, Mannix, My Three Sons, Hogan's Heroes, Love, American Style, and The Courtship of Eddie's Father. She also had a major feature role in the film Walking Tall (1973).
She was married to Bill Bixby from 1971 until 1980. She was romantically involved with talk radio host Tammy Bruce who she broke up with 2 weeks before her death. Some rumors suggest she was also involved with a male costar of Days. On the day of Benet's suicide, Bruce thought that she would be meeting Benet for lunch. According to Bruce, Benet was locked inside the bathroom of her home when she arrived. Bruce thought something was wrong and went to get help. After Bruce stepped outside, Benet shot herself.
Bill Bixby would live 11 more years following the death of his x wife Benet and be married twice more. Bill Bixby (January 22, 1934 – November 21, 1993) was shortly married to Hulk costar Laura Michaels in 1990 or 1991 and divorced in 1992 at the same he was diagnosed with prostate cancer. He married artist Judith Kliban in 1993, just six weeks before he collapsed on the set of Blossom. Bixby died on November 21, 1993, six days after his final assignment on Blossom as director. Bixby had directed most of the third season of Blossom.
